Several critical milestones have already been achieved. The initial clinical planning for the Center was completed in late 2005 and the architectural design announced in early 2007. A key project milestone, Sidra's schematic design, was completed in the summer of 2008.
The project team is now engaged in planning the intricate details of a variety of different functional areas. These range from Information Technology and administrative processes, to determining the extensive equipment requirements, and planning for the delivery of future clinical services. Detailed planning for a wide variety of support services such as digital imaging and radiology, computerized pharmacy, laboratory, food services, laundry, materials management, security and housekeeping is also reaching an advanced stage, to ensure that the medical center will provide health care services at "world class standards."
Sidra is a complex undertaking given the advanced level of technology that will be incorporated into the all-digital facility. The technology will include the latest equipment and software applications for clinical, administrative, and research functions.
After construction, there will be a period of commissioning to confirm that all systems and installations at Sidra are fully operational. There will also be several months of training for the Center staff to ensure they can fully utilize the technologies and can effectively function in an all-digital environment.
Project Staff
As of September 2008, Sidra's team comprises 107 full time employees, with a further 34 interim health care consultants involved in the project. As the project planning becomes increasingly detailed, it is anticipated that Sidra will grow to about 300 employees by June 2009, with Information Technology experts comprising a third of this. It is expected that once Sidra opens for service at the end of 2011, it will employ more than 4000 clinicians, technologists, biomedical researchers and support staff.
